Custom LASIK

The Intralase is a laser device that can make the corneal flap, which is an integral part of the LASIK procedure. To understand how the Intralsae works, it will help to first review how the microkeratome works.

The microkeratome is a very highly engineered and precisely constructed mechanical device that creates a corneal flap. It has blade and a motor, and, as it propels itself across the cornea, a footplate just ahead of the blade flattens the cornea to allow the creation of a uniform flap. When properly maintained, and in the hands of a competent refractive surgeon, the microkeratome is a very dependable device for creating a uniform corneal flap. My current microkeratome has served me well with great clinical success since I upgraded to it in 1999 when it first became available.
